]]> http://www.beside-still-waters.org/blog/2008/01/21/joining-technorati/feed/ 0 Revamping the website (again) http://www.beside-still-waters.org/blog/2008/01/18/testing-onetwothree/ http://www.beside-still-waters.org/blog/2008/01/18/testing-onetwothree/#comments Fri, 18 Jan 2008 18:12:43 +0000 Christine http://beside-still-waters.org/wordpress/?p=5 As I’ve been redoing the entire website as like a half static website and half blog, the hardest part is deciding what it should look like and then using my very limited HTML and CSS skills to adjust a theme to what I want.  I started out with one design that I liked, but I couldn’t make the text big enough to make it readable against the background I used plus for some reason the widgets just would not work.  The guy who created that theme said that it was widget-ready, but try as I might they just wouldn’t work.  That, and I couldn’t get it to do some things with the pages, like use a different template for the pages than what I use for the blog, that my WordPress for Dummies book said that I could. So, here’s a totally different theme, and in all I do think it is 100 times better.  Hopefully I can figure out how to tweak what pages show in the bar at the top, fix my graphics, and adjust the font of the top header.  In all, I must admit it is a major improvement.

I’m still learning and I’ve several times used, as Beth Moore puts it, every-slang-word-that-isn’t-technically-a-cuss-word at it.  Especially when it randomly decides to reformat my posts and take out the lines in between paragraphs. But, it’s getting there…

Story of my life.

Anyhoo, now I got some linky love goin’ on, with a blogroll that is not comprehensive (I use Bloglines) but at least representative. Same goes for the music selections. I might figure out how to do the whole “ipod shuffled” playlist thing sometime.

Doing this was mostly because I wanted to figure out how to put my LibraryThing catalog on here, now that I’ve gotten almost all of my books in there. There are a few missing, but I’m quite sure that you are going to think that I’m really bizarre in my tastes of reading material. Remember a few things: some stuff was required reading in Seminary and College, and some is just because I need to be able to let my mind escape the real world for awhile. I’ll get the ratings hooked up as I have time to recollect what I thought when I read the book the first time, and/or to actually read the book! :-)

Oh, yeah! I forgot that I gotta stick on here my Facebook page link. Hmmm…that’ll have to do for now until I figure out how to add it in the sidebar. If anyone out there that might actually take a gander at this, I’m really just a pathetic amateur that only knows enough HTML to be dangerous, but not to make it look really good and behave properly. If you’d like to help me out, I’d much appreciate it!

For some silly reason that is beyond my understanding, it has the border on the right side too far over and makes it look like the middle posting section is off-centered.Microsoft – what else do I need to say? If anyone wants a better browser, go get for FREE Netscape or Mozilla. I recently downloaded Mozilla, but I haven’t really tried it out – it looks like it is basically the same as Netscape so I may not switch over to it.Anyways, if it looks funny on your browser, I’m sorry. I can’t fix it.:-)

I had so much fun making the header (and there will be other different ones as the mood strikes me) and I’ve learned so much about Paint Shop Pro and how to do some of this stuff.Now, I must confess that I did not take the photograph that I used for the header(s). I’m not quite that good a photographer – one can only have so many hobbies! The bummer is that I would give credit to whoever did take it, except that I don’t know. I had a bunch of pictures that I downloaded a LONG time ago to be desktop backgrounds, and I don’t remember where I got them from. I do remember that it was from a free website – so please don’t think that I failed to pay for them, they were offered for free. I’m very careful about that, because I understand the need to pay when it is requested – after all, I’m a musician and I do expect to get paid when I play for a wedding or some other concert/occasion unless it is a friend and I offer to do it for free. I’m offering some music I arranged and recorded for free, so I know how that goes.Anyways, I’m way excited about how it is looking. Except somehow I screwed up the side bar and it’s margins. Hmmmm….I’ll have to figure out what I did wrong and fix it. Html, XML, and CSS is really confusing!!! This is especially for someone who only knows basic HTML – just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to know how to do it totally correctly!! Oh well, I’ll get better as I do more, and as I create my full website. ;-) Yes, in case you didn’t catch that, I will have a full website, eventually, but I’m not going to put it out in cyberspace until I have a good deal of it done. I hate going to places and click on stuff expecting to see/get whatever the label says, and then it opens a page that says “coming soon”. AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! It is a major tease!Well, toodles all. 3 posts in 3 days…woh, someone might actually start thinking that I like writing, which I actually do not! LOL
