My friend Alicia issued this challenge to post 10 things we are thankful for each of the last 7 days, concluding with today. I’m a loser and forgot about it until today, and I hope I don’t miss the spirit of her challenge if I make it only 7 things, one for each day, that are heartfelt and complete. I’d rather group things together, instead of breaking them up just to meet the proper number.

“On your feet now–applaud God! Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into his presence. Know this: God is God and God, God. He made us; we didn’t make him. We’re his people, his well-tended sheep. Enter with the password: ‘Thank you!’ Make yourselves at home, talking praise. Thank him. Worship him. For God is sheer beauty, all-generous in love, loyal always and ever.” Psalms 100 (The Message)

I’m thankful for…
1. God. God loving me, God helping me, God through the Holy Spirit teaching me, God’s son Jesus saving me, God providing for me, God’s plan for me, God’s Word the guides me, and for just being God in my life. I am nothing without you, and my life would have no purpose.

2. My family. Sometimes certain family members drive me crazy, but I am still thankful for all of them. Mom for letting me live with you for such low rent and being there for me all the time, Dad for fixing my car and being a great earthly example of God the Father’s love, Mammy for her joyful spirit and being someone I can talk to about anything, Greg for being a good big brother and sharing our love for NASCAR, Beth for sharing in a love of classical and folk music and caring in your own unique way, and my nephew Bradley for helping me get in touch with my inner child and having fun together. I’m also thankful for my many aunts and uncles, and I’m glad that we have been trying to get together a few times a year lately so that it isn’t just at funerals that we see each other.

3. My babies, Samantha and Lilly. I don’t know what I’d do without your unconditional love and affection. What is life like without a purring cat next to or on top of me when I go to sleep?

4. My friends from many different times in my life, and they are much better friends to me than I am to them. The oldest friends of all are from Eastwood Church of the Brethren, where I grew up going to church so most of them have known me since I was in diapers, I’m especially grateful for the Abes, the Griffiths, the Beatys, Linda’s Sunday School class, and Pastor Paul from more recent years there. Kara, Alicia, Cindy, Sarah, Mandee, Dave, Nona, and Martina from school days, you are the long-term friends that however long it has been since we’ve talked it is like we pick up where we left off. From the college days – Jodi, Melanie, Harvey, Amanda, Dwayne, Heidi, the BC Music Department (faculty and students) from ’93-’97, Pinion Players from ’93-’97, the MacPhails, Vince, and so many other dear people. I’ve lost track of friends from Seminary, but they did mean a lot to me during that trying time – Alexa, Bonnie, Wendy M., Heidi, Tom, Moses, and my small group from Grace Covenant Church. Friends from Faith Church in Twinsburg – Molly, the Todds, the Denges, the Mathews, the Albertas, the Morrisons, Theresa, the Loughleys, the Springers, and the MYF, I miss you all. Jonathan, Pam, and Karen at Aldersgate Renewal Ministries, you have blessed me so much. Cheryl, Mike, Cindy, Mindy, Sally, Linda, Sheri, Mary Beth, and the rest of my co-workers that put up with me on a daily basis (especially in tax season when we see each other more than our families!). My Bible Study group, though we are having a tough time getting together lately – Wendy G., MJ, Pam, Rebecca, and Deb, you’ve helped me grow a lot these last couple of years. Many friends from Emmaus and Chrysalis that I can’t even begin to name. My newest friends at Faith Church in Brimfield – Curt, Michelle, Chris, Seb, David, and the Task Force, you all have become a great church family. I know there are so many more people that I am somehow leaving out, and one of the things that I seemed to be blessed with (though it sometimes feels like a curse) is that once I know someone well I never forget them. It may seem like I have forgotten you because I can’t seem to get over my feeling bad about not having kept up with you, but I honestly think of you often, pray for you, and wonder what has happened with you and your life.

5. The internet and the blogosphere. While probably a bit false, it is so nice to feel connected with so many people in the world that I admire and have common interests. I have learned so much about how to live out my faith and be a better worship leader through all the great resources on the internet (see my blogroll and Links page). I wish you existed like you do now when I was in seminary, it probably would have helped me with some really dark times to not feel so disconnected and lonely – but I’m sure that God meant that time to be that way so that I would draw closer to Him to get to be where I am now.

6. My iPod, Kurzweil keyboard, Q cellphone, digital camera, telescope, PC desktop, Ford Escape, and Mac laptop. These are just things, but they are things that 5 or 6 years ago I never would have imagined to be able to have. I’m truly blessed such that I have been pretty stumped as to what to tell my family to get me for Christmas. How about finding me a boyfriend? Too bad you can’t buy one of those at Amazon.com. LOL

7. Last, but certainly not least, my Compassion International child Bridget. I’ve so enjoyed her letters, though I need to get better about writing her back. Mostly it is just a blessing to know that I am making a difference in her life, and I haven’t missed the money each month one bit. I hope I get to meet her someday. Thank you, God, for the lessons in giving that I’ve learned this year.

One of my favorite singers is Steven Curtis Chapman – so many of his songs have encouraged and inspired me, and when I’ve seen him in concert (and even got to meet him once at 95.5 The Fish local Christian radio station) it shows very clearly how much he loves Jesus and wants to share his faith with others. All day today I am listening to his CD’s, and I can’t help but to think that God prepared him for this when He gave the inspiration for songs like ”With Hope”, “Speechless”, “God Is God”, “Be Still And Know”, and “All Things New”.

There are many places on the internet that tell about the devastating accident that killed his youngest daughter, Maria, last night. I can’t even imagine what that family is going through right now, and I am lifting them up in prayer that they be comforted and held in the Father’s loving arms, and not forget the hope that they have that they will see her again. If you would like to leave a short prayer for them you can at the page set up by the Chapman’s in Maria’s Memory here, and at Ragamuffin Soul’s blog here.

I don’t have much time for a post, but I didn’t want to miss saying that we all truly need to find some time today and pray. For our communities, for our country, and for the world. There is a lot of sin and bad stuff in the world, and the one thing we CAN do, and is honestly the most powerful thing to do, is to pray.

I love the Casting Crowns song – What If His People Prayed. Listen to it and really hear the words, they are powerful and true.

Bridget Natocho, age 3, Uganda, Africa

Personal and Family Information:
Bridget lives with her father and her mother. Her father is sometimes employed as a laborer and her mother is sometimes employed as a laborer. Bridget works at home helping in the kitchen and running errands.

Bridget is not presently attending school. Singing, walking and listening to music are her favorite activities. She also attends church activities regularly.

Please remember Bridget in your prayers. Your love and support will help her to receive the assistance she needs to grow and develop.

I’ve been following the bloggers who are in Uganda (BooMama, Ragamuffin Soul, Shlog, Flower Dust, Whittaker Woman), and it just kept bringing to my heart all the times that I felt God wanted me to do this. I kept thinking before that others who make more money than I do can handle it, because I live paycheck to paycheck and there isn’t a lot left over. I’ve been feeling bummed about being single, not even dating, and wondering if I ever will get married and have children. Feeling sorry for myself and having a royal pity-party.

It really is just 2 CD’s a month that I’d have to discipline myself to not buy. 2 CD’s…a life made whole and healthy and happy. It is no comparison. She likes to sing and listen to music just like me. She is so cute in her pretty pink dress, but she needs hope. I may not have my own kids, but I can support one who is already alive and pour out the love given to me by my Father.

How about you? Give a gift of love and life here.

Lord, help me to be faithful to this. Happy Valentine’s Day.

It constantly amazes me how God works out the right thing at the right time. Very soon I will be minister of music for Faith United Methodist Church in Brimfield, Ohio. I’m so excited about what God has planned for me there, and about how the church is transforming and turning their eyes on God. It really just fell in my lap, through a friend, all of the sudden and the reason I didn’t start right away in November is because we had already made plans at the church where I’ve been for music for Christmas and I didn’t feel right about bailing on them.

I think it interesting that I’m going to be working for another church named “Faith”, and I’m quite sure that God has a particular reason for that “coincidence”.

A blog I regularly read, called 2nd Cup of Coffee, posted this today and I just so resonated with it that I wanted to share it with you.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I kind of wanted to jump on the bandwagon at Laurel Wreath’s place for the New Year’s meditation thing, but I didn’t think I had anything deep or wide enough to sing about, so I’m doing an abbreviation on the theme. I’m calling it “1 Thing.” It’s a small phrase, but if I were re-naming my blog, I would call it 1 Thing because of what it represents in Philippians 3:13-14:. . .But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.I joke about my feeble memory, and sometimes I am seriously worried about what lies ahead for me medically because I’m already memory-challenged. Interestingly, though, my mind is weak mainly in certain areas. For instance, I can’t seem to memorize scripture very well, and I often forget to buy bagels for the school reading club breakfast, for example. But my absent-mindedness is selective. It skims over the good stuff and pores over the bad. On a daily basis, I catch myself rehearsing the times I failed, sinned, embarrassed myself, hurt others, insisted on some selfish idea, etc.I think I know why I get stuck in the condemnation loop. See if this analogy makes sense to you:My sin is like an intruder who broke into my home and assaulted my family or me. The intruder may have been apprehended and taken away forever to jail, but every night, I think I hear him, or see his shadow, or I re-trace the horror of the details of the invasion, and I am afraid again. The truth may be that he is gone, but the memory still has power over me.I know the truth about my mistakes is that the Lord, in his “compassions that fail not,” has forgiven me–my sins are blotted out, dissipated, conquered, by his power. However, he does not erase the occurrences from my memory. Ironically, painful memories and regret can help me understand my weaknesses and help keep me from falling again. But the sin memory can also hold me captive and beat me down like a slave. However, the truth is, I’m NOT a slave to my past behaviors. The truth is, God apprehended my sin and took it away forever. I am not defined by a shameful list of secret and not-so-secret sins. That’s why when I feel that old heaviness coming on, I need to remember ONE THING >>> to forget what is behind and press on toward my destiny, the reason I was created–to glorify God and enjoy him forever. After all, God “thought me up;” I didn’t have any say in my existence. For some reason, he wants me to “be.”And if 1 Thing in Philippians 3 isn’t enough to encourage you, see if these examples of 1 Thing speak to your heart:Psalm 27:4 … One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.Luke 10:42 … but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Mary chose to focus on Jesus; Martha, her sister, was fretting about hostess responsibilities while he was in their home. He wants a relationship with us.)2 Peter 3:8 … But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. (Do we really think about eternity very often? Are we patient concerning God’s timing in answering prayer?)John 9:24-25 … A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God,” they said. “We know this man [Jesus] is a sinner.” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”I’m asking the Lord to break through the distractions and blindspots of my life this year, to help me focus on relationships and eternity, and to press on to be who he created me to be. Boil it down to One thing that I need in 2007: Jesus.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord!!Just when I wonder if God is paying any attention whatsoever, He tenderly and lovingly shows me in countless ways that He truly loves me.The holidays are hard for me – since my parents divorced in ’96, but especially since I moved back up to Ohio in 2000, Christmas never feels “right”. Everything going on celebrates “family” and yet mine never can seem to get along even for one day. What is funny is it actually isn’t my parents all that much, though it is hard to get them to decide on what they are going to do, it is my siblings. Anyway, long story short my sister made her own plans to be somewhere else on Christmas, which is just as well because she usually causes the most tension and stress, and my dad and stepmom went down to my stepsister’s in Columbus. So, my aunt and I went to my mom’s house, where my brother and my nephew spent the night and we had Christmas together. My brother managed to upset my nephew only once with a silly demand and an even sillier punishment, and my grandma complained about us watching “Cars” on DVD only twice. All in all, a pretty good day considering how it has gone in the past.Anyway, because of that family stuff and because all the hoopla makes the desire to have a family of my own (husband and children, ahem) come out full-force, I also usually feel REALLY lonely. This year, while I did face some of that once again, God new the prayer in my heart and brought back to me some friends from my past (high school) and helped me get closer to other present friends. I don’t know why, but friendships always seem to be difficult for me – not necessarily difficult to create, but difficult to go deeper than a surface friendship and very difficult to continue if circumstances of life draw us away from living near one another and seeing each other regularly. I can’t say that I’m all that great at keeping up correspondences, but the funny thing is that all of my friends from as far back as I can remember have the same problem. They don’t write me much, and I don’t seem to either. It isn’t on purpose, and it isn’t because I don’t care or they don’t care, it just happens for no real reason. The other gift of Christmas God brought me is actually continuing to show me that I’m headed in the right direction with starting my Beside Still Waters Ministries business. I just had another church agree to pay me to lead worship on a regular basis on Saturday evenings. It was basically laid in my lap with little effort from me, and I am just amazed. With the money from the cantata I played for at Uniontown, I was able to register my own domain name for the next three years. I only have one page there right now, and the only link that works is to go to this blog, but here it is: http://www.beside-still-waters.org/ . Just so you know, the dashes are important, the name without them was already registered to someone else as was using “.com” at the end instead of “.org” I also got for a little more money an e-mail address using that domain name. I’ll be switching all my business stuff to that.Well, gotta go because lunch is done. God is good – ALL the time!!
