This weekend I actually was on the team for a Worship in Spirit and Truth (WIST) Seminar, sponsored by Aldersgate Renewal Ministries, in Plymouth, Michigan. The Boy Scouts led the worship at my church, and I’m sure that they did a great job (albeit probably too loud for the some of the congregation!). Which reminds me of a great t-shirt I saw once at either Ichthus or Alive, “If it is too loud, you are too old!” Amen to that!
Jonathan graciously asked me to lead worship a few times during the weekend, so here are the songs I chose for each of those times:
Lord I Lift Your Name On High / Glorify Thy Name
Praise To The Lord The Almighty – Nathan & Christy Nockels’ arrangement
God Of Wonders
I also led worship for Sunday School, and because it was in a room without projection available I used songs from the United Methodist Hymnal that were fairly near each other to make it easy for them to turn to each one. The real challenge for me was that I had pictured in my mind a small-ish room, so I decided to lead from guitar instead of keyboard. It was in fact a large room in their basement, but I think it still worked out well even though I was a little less comfortable than I would have liked.
Fairest Lord Jesus
Oh, How I Love Jesus
My Jesus I Love Thee
It was a fantastic weekend, full of great fellowship, amazing testimony and learning, and an overflow of the Holy Spirit. I felt really good about leading worship until I got there and heard about how musically talented the church’s music director is (she has a doctorate), and the reality of leading worship in front of Jonathan also kind of hit me, and then I got nervous and feeling totally inadiquate. If you are wondering about what this WIST is all about, basically it is the “how, what, when, where, & why” of worship and I suggest you see ARM’s website for more info.
